The International Shipping Federation

The International Shipping Federation (ISF) is the world's largest international employers' association dedicated to the interests of the manpower behind the shipping industry. They provide guidance and advice to members either directly or via an extensive range of global contacts by representing members in all relevant arenas where issues are regulated.

The ISF represents the employers' voice on industrial relations issues. They proactively explain and justify employers' to the media. Basically, the ISF is the shipping industry's PR firm. The ISF also acts as an authority on the STCW Convention and provides assistance via advice on the Convention's detailed technical requirements.

The ISF supports other international shipping organizations such as the International Chamber of Shipping and the International Maritime Employers' Committee. Each organization is independent but these links between the various groups ensure an exchange of information and prevent duplication of effort. Outside of the shipping world, the ISF serves as a consultant to the International Labor Organization. Here, the ISF coordinates the shipowner's position at all maritime meetings. It takes on the same role at the International Maritime Organization.

In addition to the activities representing the shipowners of the world, the ISF is also an active member of the International Committee on Seafarers' Welfare. The main focus of their work is directed towards the regulation of labor standards, the regulation of medical standards where applicable to seafarers, and the regulation of professional standards applying to seafarers. The ISF also spends a lot of time providing information or guidance to the industry concerning international wage rates, training developments, and recruitment trends.
