Icebergs
An iceberg is a large block of freshwater ice that has broken off from a snow-formed glacier or ice shelf that is floating in open water. Basically, an iceberg is a huge ice cube.
Icebergs are possible because the density of pure ice is roughly 920 kilogram/cubic meter while sea water is about 1025 kilograms per cubic meter. This means that ice is less dense than salt water and so will float. In most cases, only about a tenth of an iceberg’s total volume is above water.
The shape and size of the iceberg under the water can be difficult to guess from looking at what is above the surface of the water. This has led to the expression “tip of the iceberg.” It is generally used to describe a problem or difficulty that it is later determined that the original part of the problem was just the beginning or a small manifestation of a larger problem.
When an iceberg melts in the water, it makes a fizzing sound called “Bergie Seltzer.” This sound is due to the compressed air bubbles that are trapped in the iceberg. When it melts, the air is released and the air bubbles pop. The bubbles come from air trapped in snow lawyers that later became glacial ice.
There are some people who view icebergs as the world’s greatest campgrounds. These ice campers camp on top of flat or hollowed out icebergs and are known as icebergers. Icebergs are mainly found in coastal waters due to tides, waves, and wind.
